Cotton is a natural seed fiber widely used in the textile industry due to its softness, breathability, and versatility. It serves as one of the most commonly used raw materials in clothing manufacturing. Cotton’s quality, characteristics, and performance depend on factors such as fiber length, origin, processing methods, and yarn count. This article provides a detailed classification of cotton and explores its advantages, disadvantages, and proper care instructions.

1. Classification of Cotton by Fiber Length

The quality of cotton is often determined by the length of its fibers:

Long-Staple Cotton:

  • Long-Staple Cotton

Fiber length ranges from 33–39mm (can extend up to 64mm).

    •

Examples: Island cotton, Egyptian cotton, Pima cotton (including Supima cotton), Xinjiang long-staple cotton.

  • Fine-Staple Cotton:

Fiber length ranges from 23–33mm.

  • Coarse Cotton:

Fiber length is less than 23mm. (This type is largely outdated and rarely used today).

2. Classification by Origin.

Cotton quality can vary significantly based on its place of cultivation:

  • Xinjiang Cotton (China)
  • Egyptian Cotton
  • American Cotton
  • Australian Cotton
  •

3. Classification After Processing.

Processed cotton comes in different finishes to suit various purposes:

  • Mercerized Cotton:

Cotton treated for increased strength, shine, and dye absorption.

Single-Side Mercerization: Treatment applied to cotton yarn or fabric.

  • Double Mercerization: Both yarn and fabric undergo mercerization.

Liquid Ammonia Mercerized Cotton:

Enhances smoothness and wrinkle resistance.

  • Combed Cotton:

Processed to remove impurities and short fibers for a smoother finish.

  • General Sparse Cotton:

Less refined with a looser weave.

  • Bamboo Cotton:

Blended with bamboo fiber for softness and antibacterial properties.

  • Washed Cotton:

Pre-washed for a soft, worn-in texture.

4. Classification by Yarn Count.

Yarn count (denoted as “S”) indicates the fineness of the cotton yarn:

  • Lower Counts: 16s, 21s, 26s (coarser and thicker yarn).
  • Higher Counts: 32s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 100s, 120s (finer and smoother yarn).
  •

Note: Cotton with a yarn count above 40s is classified as high-count cotton. The higher the count, the finer and more delicate the fabric.

5. Classification by Textile Process.

  • Single-Sided Cotton: Fabric with one finished surface.
  • Double-Sided Cotton: Fabric finished on both sides for added thickness.
  • Single Yarn: Made from a single strand of cotton fiber.
  • Double Yarn: Twisted two-strand cotton for added strength and durability.

6. Advantages of Cotton.

  • Natural and Eco-Friendly: Biodegradable and sustainable.
  • Soft and Comfortable: Gentle on the skin.
  • Breathable: Excellent air permeability.
  • Moisture Absorption: Wicks away sweat and moisture.
  • Heat Resistance: Tolerates high temperatures.
  • Antibacterial and Odor-Resistant: Natural freshness.
  • High Strength: Durable and long-lasting.
  • No Static Electricity: Unlike synthetic fibers.

7. Disadvantages of Cotton.

  • Prone to wrinkling.
  • Susceptible to shrinking.
  • Poor elasticity.
  • Lacks acid resistance.

8. Care and Washing Instructions for Cotton.

To maintain the quality and lifespan of cotton fabrics:

  • Washing: Suitable for hand wash, machine wash, or dry cleaning.
  • Detergent: Use neutral detergent.
  • Water Temperature: Keep below 40°C.
  • Soaking Time: Avoid soaking for more than 30 minutes.
  • Drying: Air dry naturally; avoid direct sunlight to prevent color fading and shrinkage.

Conclusion

Cotton remains an essential and versatile fabric in the textile industry due to its natural properties, comfort, and adaptability. While it comes with minor disadvantages like wrinkling and shrinkage, its numerous advantages make it a preferred choice for various garments and home textiles. By understanding its classifications, qualities, and proper care, manufacturers and consumers can ensure the best performance and longevity from cotton fabrics.
